Growing up in an agricultural setting in Rehobeth, Alabama, J.P. Kelley started farming with his father in 1986, and took over the small commercial cattle herd when he became ill in 2009. In 2011, J.P. and his wife, Linda, acquired a small beefmaster herd and have continued to grow their numbers ever since. While expanding their family to two grown daughters, two sons-in-laws, and six grandchildren, they have also been expanding the facilities.
Carey Slay joined J.P. and Linda in early 2023 and collectively they formed Kelley Genetics, LLC. J.P. and Linda’s vision for the Beefmaster’s breed was ambitious and Carey expressed an interest in assisting them in becoming the best breeders, by embracing and using genetic technology and feeding systems seldom found in the southeast. Carey knew the learning curve would be great but with the Kelley’s knowledge, proper facilities, and plans for the future, both parties share great optimism for the Beefmasters breed.
Here at Kelley Genetics, we're excited about our future, which includes a feed efficiency test site to identify the best genetics, and look forward to building our relationships with commercial and purebred cattlemen.
